29th April to 20th May, 2011. Point Pelee etc. Canada

J.F., Mrs. D.R. and D. Cooper & Ms. B. Kay.

All the photographs were taken by ourselves.

Owing to the length of this blog item, and also for including the daily log, but not in any bird order, and also the large number of photographs which the three of us took in the Point Pelee area, the time taking to view this patricular blog is considerable. It will probably be advisable if you increase the magnifcation of your computer viewing to 125x. I have arranged that the blog is on a daily basis and therefore it repeats species especially migrtant warbler pictures throughout the blog. On some days there were good arrivals of migrants and many of these were seen feeding on the ground, and often were very approachable.

During our visit to Point Pelee, we recorded 202 species of birds, and between us we were able to photograph 149 of these.

29th April, 2011. Arrived from Gatwick to Toronto Airport, hired a car and we then drove to Niagara Falls and stayed overnight here, looking at the Falls in colour floodlights.

We only recorded just a total of ten species due to the shortage of  daylight time on our arrival in Canada with the highlight being a Sharp Shinned Hawk, 1,000 Ring-billed Gulls and 2 Turkey Vultures.

Niagara Falls Illuminated at night.

30th April, 2011 Visited the Niagara Falls during the early morning and then drove to the nearby Dufferin Island N.R where we birded for a couple of hours. Drove to Wheatley arriving late afternoon, and moved into our cottage situated on the edge of Lake Erie, where we will be staying for the next 3 weeks.

Views of the Niagara Falls., the spray was agaist us for photographs.

Some local flowers.

Whilst travelling towards Point Pelee we saw a selection of North American birds when we made several stops, and we took the following photographs.

13th May, 2011: Awoke to foggy but calm conditions. We walked West Beach to the Point and then a stormy shower made us return to the Visitors Centre where we were told about a Bell's Vireo near the shelter at the Point so we quickly made our way back to see it. We then tried Northwest Beach. We made an evening visit to Hillman's marsh where a considerable number and variety of warbler species were found in the evening sunlight including a splendid Cerulean Warbler.

20th May, 2011: Our final full day. Awoke to a foggy morning but became sunny and hot by mid-day, when a small passage of raptors occured over the Visitors Centre. We first visited the Point and after a short raptor watch from the Visitors Centre we walked Tilden's Wood and Shusters trial. We then visited Hillman's marsh where we were told about 2 Red Necked Phalaropes which were on a small pool at Leamington which we quickly visited. Our final birding was to Wheatley Harbour in the evening.
