Argentina 4

Continues with David and my birding trip to the Atlantic forest in Argentina 1n 1995.

Chaco Chachalaca Ortalis canicollis

A distant Chaco Chachalaca in the chaco.

It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Paraquay, and Urugay. They feed both on the ground and in trees, and its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical dry forests. On our trip we recorded it with three seen in chaco at JVG on the 20th and six seen along the road in chaco near JVG on the 21st.

Dusky-legged Guan - Penelope obscura bridgesi

It occurs in the gallery forests in the NE of Argentina. One seen briefly along the Yala River on the 14th while ten allowed prolonged views at Calilegua NP on the 17th with four also seen there on the 18th.

Limpkin - Aramus guarauna guarauna


Limpkin at Costanera Sur Ecological Reserve.
Found mostly in wetlands in warm parts of the Americas from Florida to N. Argentina. It chiefly feeds on apple snails. During our trip small numbers were seen on five dates with a daily maximum of eight seen at Attalaya on the 13th. All seen along coastal strip except two along the river near Tucuman on the 21st.

It occurs in Argentina in the N. lowlands and it moves north during the winter. It is a vagrant to the high Andes and the Falkland Islands, and on our trip two were seen on roadside lagoons on the drive to San Clemente on the 11th with eight seen Campo del Tuyu on the 12th. Five were seen at Costanera Sur on the 4th.

They are widespread in Argentina. On our trip we recorded ten at Campo del Tuyu on 12th and 100+ at Costanera Sur on the 4th.

Wattled Jacana Jacana jacana

In Argentina, it is widespread in the N lowlands and foothills. We recorded one near Punta Rasa on the 12th and five seen on a river close to Attalaya on the 13th. Forty seen at Costanera Sur Reserve on the 4th.

American Golden Plover - Pluvialis dominica

They winter in Southern South America between August to April. We recorded on our trip with one seen along the roadside near San Clemente on the 11th, and twenty at Punta Rasa marsh on the 12th with five at the Abra Pampa marsh on the 15th.

Breeds in Argentina, Chile and the Falkland Islands. Its natural habitats are freshwater lakes, saline marshes, rocky and sandy shores. On our trip ten were watched feeding on the beach at Punta Rasa on the 12th.

It breeds in Argentina, Boliva, Chile and Peru. Its natural habitats includes freshwater lakes as well as saline, blackish and alkaline marshes. On our trip forty were seen at Lago Pozuelos on the 15th.

Migratory wader that breeds in North America and winters in South America and Oceania. During our trip we saw six on roadside pools on the drive to San Clemente on the 11th, ten were seen at Punta Rasa on the 12th, ten  at Abra Pampa marsh on the 15th, 100 at Lago Pozuelos on 15th and four at Laguna Larga on the 16th.
Around eight years ago I was on a trip to Spitzbergen in June and found a Pectoral Sandpiper on a sloping cliff face and from its behaviour it appeared to be holding terriority. I quickly informed another birder on this trip, who re-found this bird and agreed with me that it was holding terriority.

Baird's Sandpiper - Calidris bairdii

They breed in the northern tundra from Eastern Siberia to Westland Greenland. It is a ling distant migrant wintering in South America. During our trip 300+ were seen at Lago Pozuelos and a few at Abra Pampa marsh on the 15th and 20 at Abra Pampa marsh on 16th.

They breed in the northern tundra of Canada and Alaska. During our trip one was seen along the roadside to San Clemente and 50 at Punta Rasa beach on 12th.

Hudsonian Godwit - Limosa haemastica

They breed in N.W.Canada and Alaska and on the shores of the Hudson Bay. After the breeding season they migrate to South America and the Caribbean. During our trip, Forty were seen on the beach at Punta Rasa on the 12th. This species is listed as Near- threatened by Collar et al. (1994).

Paraguayan (South American) Snipe - Gallinago paraguaiae magellanica

This small Snipe breeds in most of South America away from the Pacific coast and eastern Brazil.
     One seen on a stream near Attalaya on the 13th and three seen at Costanera Sur on the 4th.

Wilson's Phalarope - Phalaropus tricolor

Breeds in the prairies of N.America, in W. Canada and the W. united States. It is migartory wintering on inland salt lakes in the Andes inArgentina. On our trip forty were seen at Abra Pampa marsh on 15th and 16th, and ten at Lago Pozuelos on the 15th.
