28th August, 2019 Beachy Head Overcast with a period of rain SW 1 increasing to 3

A cooler overcast morning with a period of rain. As birding has been disappointing at Birling so far this Autumn, we decided to visit Shooters Bottom early morning. For the first 30 plus minutes good numbers of Whitethroats and Blackcaps were very active, but then birds went very quiet. After 15 minutes steady rain started and suddenly in the rain birds became very active again and we quickly found a Wryneck about 10 metres away, at the bottom of the main track.
We then visited the Old Trapping Area, radio mast bushes, Icky ridge, Hotel Garden but very few migrants were now being seen. We had previously sent news of the Wryneck to LP, KH, RKH and RES  and we met up with them at Shooters Bottom, also RB, but the Wryneck hadn't been seen again. We spent a further hour searching for it, but no further joy.
RE and two members of the BHRG were ringing in Whitbread Hollow, but unfortunately the rain interrupted the ringing.
