Continue with the birding trip which Terry and myself went on to Panama in 2008.
Streak-chested (Spectacled) Antpitta Hylopezus perspicillatus Five subspecies. Three singles seen on three dates near the Canopy Tower area and three were also heard calling on the 15th in the same area. Uncommon in lower growth or on the ground of humid forests in lowlands and lower foothills to about 750 m. Range Nicaragua to western Ecuador.

Squirrel Cuckoo Piaya cayana Thirteen subspecies Recorded on six dates with a total of seven birds were seen. They were seen at both locations. Common in forest boarders, second-growth woodland, and shrubby clearings with trees. Range: Mexico to Boliva, northern Argentina and Uruguay.

Spotted Antbird Hylophylax naveioides Two subspecies. Just recorded on two dates along the Pipline Road, Canopy Tower with 5 birds seen with 4 on the 15th. Fairly common in undergrowth of humid forests and second-growth in lowlands and foothills. Range: Honduras to western Ecuador.

Spot-crowned Antvireo - Dysithamnus puncticeps We recorded it on three dates with a total of six birds seen. One was seen at the Canopy Lodge and five were seen near the Canopy Tower. Uncommon in lower growth of humid forests in lowlands and lower foothills to about 600m. In Canal area most readily found along Pipeline Road.


Social Flycatcher Myiozetetes similis Seven subspecies Good numbers seen around the Canopy Lodge but just odd birds seen at the Canopy Tower. Daily maximum of 20. Widespread and numerious and abundant around houses. Range: Northern Mexico to Boliva, Paraguay, northeastern Argentina and southeastern Brazil.

Southern Lapwing - Vanellus chilensis Four subspecies We just recorded this specie on two dates with three birds seen in the Tower area. Uncommon to rare on grassy areas near water. Range: Panama to Tierra del Fuego.

Southern Bentbill - Oncostoma olivaceum We recorded single birds on four dates in the Tower area. Fairly common in thickets and dense undergrowth, usually very difficult to see. Range: Central Panama to northern Colombia.

Southern Rough-winged Swallow Stelgidopteryx ruficollis Four subspecies Small numbers recorded on five dates chiefly in the Tower area with a daily maximum of six. Fairly common in open areas and clearings usually near water. Range: Eastern Honduras to northern Argentina.

Snowy-bellied Hummingbird - Amazilia edward Four subspecies. We just recorded it on three dates totalling 6 birds all in the Canopy Lodge area. Common in open woodland, clearings and gardens in lowlands and foothills. and is one of the more frequently seen and most numerous hummingbirds in non-forested parts of the Canal area. Range: Southwestern Costa Rica to eastern Panama.
Smooth-billed Ani - Crotophaga ani We recorded it on six dates with a total of twentyseven birds and it was seen in both of the Lodge and Tower areas. Daily maximum of six seen on three dates. Common in open areas, clearings and residental areas in lowlands slopes. Range:Extreme southwestern U.S.A., to northern Chile, northwestern Argentina and Guyana, not found in the Amazon basin or Brazil.

Male Black-tailed Trogon- Trogon melanurus We saw three singles in the Canopy Tower area. which included both male and female birds. Uncommon and somewhat local in humid forests and second-growth woodland on both slopes in the Canal area. Range: Central Panama to northern Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil.

Male Silver-throated Tanager Tangara icterocephala Three subspecies We recorded it only in the Canopy Lodge area on all five dates with a total of 33 birds seen with a daily maximun of twelve.
Common in forests and forest borders in foothills and highlands up to 1800 m. Range: Costa Rica to western Ecuador.

Short-tailed Hawk - Buteo brachyurus Two subspecies. We recorded it on four dates with five birds were seen and we saw them at both locations. Uncommon in mostly open or partially wooded country. Range: Florida, Mexico to northern Argentina and southern Brazil.

Male Shining Honeycreeper - Cyanerpes lucidus Two subspecies. Just a single bird recorded in the Canopy Tower area. Fairly common in canopy and borders of humid forests in foothills and in the Canal area much more numerous especially along the Pipeline road. Range Southeastern Mexico to northwestern Colombia.

Scarlet-rumped Cacique Cacicus uropygialis We recorded it on five dates with a total of twentyone with a daily maximum of 10 birds but only seen in the Canopy Tower area. Uncommon in humid forests , second-growth woodland and borders. Range: Eastern Honduras south to south-western Ecuador and Andes of eastern Peru.

Scaled Pigeon - Columba speciosa We recorded it on nine dates with twentysix birds were seen with a daily maximun of eight and they were present at both locations. Common in forest borders and second-growth woodlands and shrubby clearings in lowlands and foothills to about 1200m. Range: Southern Mexico, to Bolivia, northern Argentina and southern Brazil.

Male Rufous-tailed Hummingbird Amazilia tzacatl Five subspecies. We recorded it on eight dates with a total of 28 birds seen with the majority in the Canopy Lodge area and just odd birds seen around the Tower area. Common in open woodland, clearings and around habitations in lowlands and foothills. Range Southwestern Costa Rica, to eastern Panama.

Rufous Motmot - Baryphthengus martii Two subspecies. We recorded it on just four dates with three seen around the Canopy Lodge area and four seen around the Canopy Tower area. Fairly common in forests and second growth woodland. Range: Nicaragua to western Ecuador and western Amazonia.

Female Rufous-crested Coquette - Lophornis delattrei Two subspecies. A single female was seen on the 7th in the Canopy Lodge area. Rare in borders of humid forest and second growth woodland. Range: southwestern Mexico, southwestern Costa Rica and south locally to northern Boliva.


Rufous-capped Warbler Basileuters rufifrons Eight subspecies. We recorded it on 6 dates all from the Canopy Lodge area with a total of 33 birds with a daily maximum of ten. Fairly common in shrubby regenerating clearings. Range: Northern Mexico to Colombia and northwestern Venezuela.


Rufescent Tiger Heron - Tigrisoma lineatum Two subspecies. A single bird seen walking around in the open and six seen on the 16th. both records were recorded from the Canopy Tower area.in the Gatun Lake site.

Ruddy Ground Dove - Columbina talpacoti Four subspecies. We recorded it on four dates with a total of 17 birds. We recorded it at both the Canopy sites. Abundant in clearings, shrubby areas, and around habitations in lowlands on both slopes. Range: Mexico to Bolivia, northern Argentina and Uruguay.

Male Ruddy-breasted Seedeater Sporophila minuta Three subspecies. We just saw it on one day only when six birds were found. These were seen in the Canopy Lodge area. Locally fairly common in open savannas and pastures in the lowlands. This species essentially disappears from its Pacific slope breeding areas in about October and does not reappear in numbers until about March-April. Range: Western Mexico to northwestern Ecuador, Venezuela and the Guianas and lower Amazonian Brazil.

Male Ringed Kingfisher - Ceryle torquata Three subspecies Recorded on four dates of which 2 were seen in the Canopy Lodge area and 4 were seen in Canopy Tower area. Fairly common on lakes, rivers etc. and is widespread in the Canal area. Range: Southern Texas and Mexico to Tierran del Fuego.
