We continue with our birding trip to Argentina 1n 1995.

Crested Becard - Pachyramphus validus audax 

Female Crested Becard at Yala National Park.
It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru. Its natural habitats are subtropical or tropical moist lowland forests or montane forests. A party of three were seen at Yala NP on the 14th. and this was our only sighting.

White-naped Xenopsaris - Xenopsaris albinucha albinucha

Found in South America in humid subtropical or tropical savanna. Although widespread but very local in N. lowlands.  During our trip it was an unexpected find with a male performing well along the track leading through chaco at JVG on the 19th.

White Monjita - Xolmis irupero irupero 



A distant Adult White Monjita near Salta.
Two subspecies. It can be found in Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina, Bolivia and Uruguay. Its habitats are tropical dry shrubland and heavily degraded former forests. During out trip it was seen on four days with five seen on the drive away from Yala NP on the 14th. A single bird was seen on the drive to Libertador San Martin on the 16th, two near Tucuman on the 21st and five near Salta on the 24th.

Spot-billed Ground-Tyrant - Muscisaxicola maculirostris maculirostris

Three subspecies are found in Argentina, Boliva, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Its habitats are high-altitude shrubland and pastureland. We recorded fifteen seen on the walk to Laguna Larga on the 16th.

D'Orbigny's Chat-Tyrant - Ochthoeca oenanthoides oenanthoides

It is found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile and Peru. Its habitats are in tropical moist montaine forests and high-altitude shrubland. A tame and approachable bird found on the walk back from Laguna Larga on the 16th. A stunning looking bird and a highlight on our trip.

Spectacled Tyrant - Hymenops perspicillatus

It is found in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay and is a vargrant to other South American countries and its habitats are dry shrubland and swamps. We recorded a single female sat on a fence at Campo del Tuyu on the 12th and another male seen whilst driving near Salta on the 23rd.

Cattle Tyrant - Machetornis rixosus rixosus

Three subspecies, It inhabits drier open and semi-open areas and can be found in savannah, parkland and agricultural land. We recorded it in small numbers on eight dates in scattered locations.

Great Kiskadee - Pitangus sulphuratus argentinus

10 subspecies. Common and widespread over a lot of South America. On our trip we found it to be common being seen on 15 dates with daily maximum of 25 seen on the13th.

Fork-tailed Flycatcher - Muscivora tyrannus savana

Four subspecies. They are seen in lightly-forested or grassland areas from southern Mexico to south past Argentina. We found them to be common on our trip, being seen on 13 dates with a daily maximum of 100 being seen on the 13th.

Two subspecies. It is found in south-central and south-eastern Amazonia with habitats in dry forests or tropical moist lowland forests. On our trip will found it to be common in chaco areas with ten seen on the 18th, twenty on 19th, ten on 20th and six on the 21st.

White-tipped Plantcutter - Phytotoma rutila

Two subspecies. It is found widely in woodland and scrub of south-eastern and south-central of South America. We recorded ten which were seen on the drive from Yala on the 14th.

Brown-chested Martin - Phaeoprogne tapera fusca

Two subspecies. It is found in South and Central America and it is a vagrant to Chile and the Falkland Isles. We recorded it on six dates chiefly along the coast with a daily maximum of forty on the 13th.
