The Good Old Days - South Eastern Brazil - 26th June, 2003 to 19th July, 2003 No 3

Our No. 3 blog on our trip to South Eastern Brazil in 2003. This blog covers the area around the Caraca National Park where we stayed in the monastery and lived off bananas and local bread whilst we were there.

The Monastery at Caraca National Park

Hyacynith Visorbearer
Augastes scutatus
Endemic to Brazil with three different races all of which are located in Brazil. We recorded them with 6 along the Cascatona trial in the Caraca Nat. Park and 15 on the Summit walk at Cipo. Its considered as near threatened as within its range land is now used for cattle ranching with much disturbance.

Male Violet Capped Woodnymph
Thalurania Glaucopis
Has quite a large range from S.E.Brazil to E. Paruguay and N.E Argentina, where it is considered to be widespread and locally common.
We recorded it on eight dates with up to 12 on a day.

Surucua Trogon
Trogon surrucura aurantius
This trogon has a large range from S. Brazil to Paraguay, Uruguay and N. Argentina. It is chiefly found in humid forests and nearby habitats. We recorded it on four dates during our trips with up to 3 on a day.
