HERRING GULL Sp.

David & Myself came across this Herring Gull sp. on a beach at Ballinskelligs Bay, when we were driving around the Ring of Kerry. It seemed to show some American Herring Gull features, ie Large bulky size, pale eye, large two-toned bill (similar to immature Glaucous Gull bill), overall darker plumage than Herring Gull, dark hindneck and upper mantle, very dark underwing coverts, its primarily dark tertials and the lack of a mirror on p10. Unfortunately its whitish rump and tail pattern are unconvincing, as are its undertail coverts and barred upperparts rendering it presumably a second-winter Scandinavian Herring Gull L.a. argentatus. The following pictures shows these various differences, and although they have been cropped and sharpened, no adjustment has been made to the plumage tones.
